Where to Download Free MIDI Files

Some piano applications support MIDI files. Like Vitzik, where you can load them to render visualizations when learning a piano piece. The good thing about MIDIs is that you can find them easily on the internet for free. There are thousands of them, possibilities are endless! But what are the good websites? Here is my personal pick:

The TL;DR

For classical piano

Mutopia Project publishes sheet music, and most pieces offer MIDI and PDF formats. The files are clean and the notation is correct. The catalogue is smaller than the big archives and the site looks like it was built in 2003, but I prefer that over an AI slop one!

The Mutopia Project homepage, headed Free Sheet Music for Everyone, stating 2124 pieces of music free to download, modify, print, copy, distribute, perform and record, all public domain or Creative Commons, in PDF, MIDI and LilyPond formats, with columns browsing by instrument, composer and style
The MIDIs are computer-generated audio previews so they may sound a bit stiff

piano-midi.de is also great for piano specifically. It’s a project by Bernd Krueger. The files aren’t recorded performances: they’re sequenced note by note. The good thing is that he fixed dynamics by hand, so you don’t get the flat, every-note-at-the-same-volume sound that most sequenced files have. The catalogue is the classical repertoire, Bach through Debussy. One note: the site is served over plain HTTP rather than HTTPS, so your browser will label it “Not secure” and may warn you before letting a download finish, which is worth knowing but not worth worrying about for a MIDI file.

The piano-midi.de MIDI files page, a plain table of composers from Albéniz to Tchaikovsky with their birth and death years and musical period, and a sidebar listing the same composers
The entire catalogue, by composer with that 2000s look we love.

Kunst der Fuge has a very large classical archive. You can download a few files per day but the rest is fenced behind a subscription. Worth checking when the other two don’t have your song.

The kunstderfuge.com homepage, subtitled The Largest Resource of Classical Music in .mid files, offering five free files a day or a subscription for unlimited downloads, above a grid of painted composer portraits including Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt
Five files a day for free, then it asks for a subscription.

For pop, rock, jazz, films and other styles

BitMidi is an archive of the old web, roughly a hundred thousand files from the era when MIDI was how you put music on your homepage. No account, and you can play a file in the browser before downloading. Quality goes from excellent to meh but at least you have quantity!

The BitMidi homepage, headed Listen to your favorite MIDI files on BitMidi and stating it serves 113,229 MIDI files curated by volunteers around the world, above a Popular MIDIs list including Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody.mid and Pirates of the Caribbean - He's a Pirate.mid
Tons of MIDIs to explore!

MidiWorld is smaller, mixes multiple genres, and doesn’t ask for an account.

The midiworld.com homepage in orange and white, showing an article titled Introduction into MIDI beside a sidebar listing genres such as classic, pop, rock, movie themes and video game themes, and a top artists and composers list
The website is getting a bit outdated but still has a lot of cool MIDIs.

FreeMidi.org contains a lot of modern songs and gets updated regularly. It’s also the most aggressive with ads, so read the buttons before clicking them.

The FreeMidi.org homepage with a search box reading Search 29,014+ midi, sections for new, top and requested files, and genre buttons for rock, pop, rap hip-hop, R&B soul, classical, country, folk, jazz, blues, dance, punk and newage
Browse by genre or by artist. The account prompt is for uploading and requesting, not for downloading.

For video game music

VGMusic has decades of game music sorted by console, and it’s still online. The sequencing is often better than you’d expect, because these were made by people who cared a great deal about getting a specific song exactly right.

The VGMusic Video Game Music Archive, with a banner of Mario, Link, Sonic and Mega Man above a sidebar listing 31806 music files broken down by console, starting with Nintendo NES
Thousands of files. Quality is very good, but the MIDIs are not piano only.

Or skip the downloading

If you’d rather not eat up your disk space or dodge ads, you can use Vitzik. We keep a library of MIDI piano songs that are selectively picked rather than scraped, and each one can be opened straight in the visualizer.

Songs are graded from beginner to advanced and are curated to piano only. Nothing to download, nothing to unzip, and no discovering four bars in that the arrangement has a drum track buried in it.

The Vitzik piano songs library, a grid of song cards each showing a historical score as its cover, the title, the composer and a difficulty label: Für Elise intermediate, Ode to Joy beginner, Happy Birthday beginner, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star beginner, Moonlight Sonata intermediate and The Blue Danube advanced
We rank MIDIs by piano difficulty. Pick one and it opens straight in the visualizer.

More songs get added regularly, and we make sure to maintain high quality.
